STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Presidential Delegation to South African Inauguration

Attorney General Janet Reno will lead a Presidential Delegation to the June 16th inauguration of South Africa's new President.

The United States is honored to celebrate with the people of South Africa their second presidential election in a new era of democracy and inclusion. Over 16 million people participated, which constitutes nearly 86 percent of eligible voters. As he steps down from office, the United States also honors President Nelson Mandela, whose leadership at home and abroad has enriched the world, and brought justice to millions.

We will continue to work closely with South Africa's new President, government, and people as they consolidate South Africa's remarkable transition to multiracial democracy and its leadership for peace in Africa and the world.
