PRESIDENT CLINTON DECLARES AN EMERGENCY EXISTS IN MICHIGAN

President Clinton today declared an emergency exists in the State of Michigan and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by record/near record snow on December 11-31, 2000.

The President's action makes Federal funding available to affected local governments in the counties of Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, Cass, Clare, Clinton, Eaton, Genesse, Gratiot, Isabella, Kalamazoo, Kent, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Midland, Montcalm, Muskegon, Oakland, Ottawa, Saginaw, St. Clair, St. Joseph, Tuscola, Van Buren and Washtenaw.

FEMA intends to provide assistance for emergency protective measures undertaken to save lives, protect public health and safety, and property. The assistance will be provided for a period of 48 hours.

James L. Witt, Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), named Robert R. Colangelo as the Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal recovery operations in the affected area.
