PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES EVAN S. DOBELLE AS A MEMBER OF THE BOARD FOR

INTERNATIONAL FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

President Clinton today announced his intent to appoint Evan S. Dobelle as a member of the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD).

Mr. Evan S. Dobelle, of Hartford, Connecticut, was named Trinity College's 18th president in December 1994. Mr. Dobelle is a leading advocate for the liberal arts, a staunch supporter of research and technology, and a passionate advocate of public-private partnerships to spur economic development. Under Mr. Dobelle's leadership, important new academic initiatives are under way, ranging from global learning sites in Cape Town, Katmandu and Rome, to a MegaCities program -- linking Trinity College to 19 cities throughout the world. His actions have provided new opportunities for academic pursuits, community service, and corporate internships around the world. Mr. Dobelle was U.S. Chief of Protocol and Assistant Secretary of State with the rank of Ambassador during the Carter Administration. He also was Commissioner of Environmental Management for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and was twice elected mayor of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He previously was the President of Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Massachusetts, and the Chancellor of the City College of San Francisco, before going to Trinity.

Mr. Dobelle received a B.A., M.A, and Ed.D. in Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an M.A. in Public Administration at Harvard University.

BIFAD provides advice to the United States Agency for International Development Administrator on international food issues.
