            PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES RAYMOND V. GILMARTIN AND
               JESSICA TUCHMAN MATHEWS AS MEMBERS TO THE
          ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR TRADE POLICY AND NEGOTIATIONS

     The President today announced his intention to appoint Raymond

Gilmartin and Jessica Tuchman Mathews, as members to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations (ACTPN).

Mr. Raymond V. Gilmartin, of Park Ridge, New Jersey, joined Merck & Co., Inc. in June 1994 as President and Chief Executive Officer. He was named to the additional post of Chairman of the Board in November 1994. For eighteen years, prior to joining Merck, he worked for Becton Dickinson and Company where he ascended to Chief Executive Officer, Chairman, and President. Mr. Gilmartin received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Union College in 1963 and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1968.

Ms. Jessica Tuchman Mathews, of Washington, DC, is President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Prior to assuming her present duties, she was Deputy Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs and a columnist for the Washington Post. Ms. Mathews also served in the Carter Administration where she was Director of the Office of Global Issues at the National Security Council. Ms. Mathews received a B.A. from Radcliffe College and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.

The Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations (ACTPN) provides overall policy and advice on matters concerning objectives and bargaining positions before entering into trade agreements and other matters connected with U. S. Trade policy. ACTPN is broadly representative of key sectors and groups of the economy, particularly those which are affected by trade.
