THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release October 17, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

During this very difficult time, Tipper's and my thoughts are with Jean Carnahan and the entire Carnahan family. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.

Governor Carnahan represented the best in public service, from serving in the United States Air Force to his time as governor. Since first being elected at the age of 26 as a municipal court judge in Rolla, Missouri, Mel served at many different levels in local and state government -- Municipal Judge, State Representative, Treasurer, Lt. Governor and Governor. In every office he held, Mel Carnahan helped improve the lives of the people of Missouri in countless ways.

As a two-term governor, Mel addressed the challenges that Missouri's families face. He enacted far-reaching education reforms, was a national leader on health care and worked to make the state's streets and neighborhoods safer.

More than this, Mel was a good friend.

Mel's son, Randy, and Chris Sifford, both loyal supporters and trusted friends, will be missed as well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the many loved ones they leave behind.

Simply put, Mel made a real difference and will be deeply missed by Tipper and me and the people of Missouri.
