STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
National Security Advisor Samuel R. Berger announced today the appointment of Charles L. (Jack) Pritchard as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council, effective October 17, 2000.
Mr. Pritchard has served as a Director of Asian Affairs at the National Security Council since June 1996. In that capacity he was responsible for Japanese and Korean Peninsula issues. He also served as deputy to the President's Special Envoy for Peace Talks with North Korea. In July, Mr. Pritchard retired from the U.S. Army after 28 years of service. During his Army career, Mr. Pritchard served in various Asia-related assignments in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and at the Pacific Command. He was stationed in Japan for 9 years.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercer University in Political Science, and his master's degree in International Studies from the University of Hawaii. He and his wife Jean live in Alexandria, Virginia. They have two grown sons and two grandchildren.
