PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES MICHAEL B. LEVY AS A MEMBER OF THE COMMISSION

FOR THE PRESERVATION OF AMERICA'S HERITAGE ABROAD

The President today announced his intention to appoint Michael B. Levy to serve as a member of the Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad.

Dr. Michael B. Levy, of Washington, D.C., is Distinguished Professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, where he teaches classes in Business Ethics and Business and Public Policy. Dr. Levy is also legislative consultant to Brownstein, Hyatt and Farber, a law firm based in Denver, Colorado and Washington, DC. In 1993, Dr. Levy was appointed by President Clinton to serve as Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs for the U.S. Department of Treasury under Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen. In 1995, he became Senior Advisor to Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin. During his tenure at Treasury, he led the Agency's team which helped pass interstate banking legislation, the assault weapons ban, the Brady Bill, NAFTA, the W.T.O., and President Clinton's 1993 budget reconciliation package. From 1987 to 1993, Levy served as Chief of Staff to former Senator Lloyd Bentsen. He served as staff economist at the Joint Economic Committee from 1985 to 1987, and from 1978 to 1985, was Associate Professor at Texas A&M University, gaining tenure in 1984.

Dr. Levy received a B.S. from Brown University and his Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University.

The purpose of the Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad is to identify and publish a list of those cemeteries, monuments, and historic buildings located abroad, which are associated with the foreign heritage of U.S. citizens from eastern and central Europe. The Commission encourages the preservation of such cemeteries, monuments, and historic buildings by gaining assurances of protection, in cooperation with the Department of State, from foreign governments.
