THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release October 3, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

Today, the Senate took an important step forward by providing temporary relief to high technology companies that are experiencing a shortage of skilled workers and increasing training opportunities for U.S. workers to meet those needs. While I commend the Senate for its action, additional steps will have to be taken in the House to ensure that the legislation provides adequate funding for job training and education.

I am disappointed that the Senate bill does not include the Latino Immigration Fairness Act. The Act would ensure fairness for immigrants now living and working in the U.S., and I call on Congress to pass it before adjournment.
