THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release September 28, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

As indicated by FBI Director Freeh in his statement today, the FBI has not confirmed statements made during the recent criminal trial of Conor Claxton that his criminal activities were known or sanctioned by the highest levels of the IRA. U.S. law enforcement will aggressively target any effort from whatever quarter that could undermine the peace process through illegal activities conducted from the United States.

The Good Friday Accord offers the best hope for securing lasting peace and prosperity for the people of Northern Ireland. We recognize that there are genuine difficulties in implementing the Accord. This underscores the need for all parties to act in a way that builds confidence in the process. The pro-Agreement parties have overcome numerous obstacles to get as far as they have. We urge them to continue to work together to resolve remaining difficulties toward full implementation of the Accord in all its aspects.
