STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

Today we took a major step toward ensuring the restoration of America's Everglades with Senate passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 2000. The bill authorizes the Administration's Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.

The Everglades Plan enjoys support from both parties and a large number of agricultural, community, business and environmental groups in Florida.

The time to save the Everglades is at hand. I urge the House to adopt this bill in an expeditious manner so that we can begin the restoration of this national treasure.
