THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release September 21, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

Tipper and I were very saddened by the news of the storm that hit 14 counties across Ohio last evening. The loss of life, scores of injuries and tremendous property loss have dealt a serious blow to the people in this region, and especially in Xenia, where many residents can still recall the devastating tornado of 1974.

I know that Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James Lee Witt has been in touch with state authorities, and FEMA is sending a damage assessment team out today to review the damage. We're going to do everything we can to help.

As the citizens of Ohio begin the process of rebuilding their homes, neighborhoods and lives, Tipper and I will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
