PRESIDENT CLINTON DECLARES A MAJOR DISASTER EXISTS IN THE DISTRICT OF

COLUMBIA

The President today declared a major disaster exists in the District of Columbia and ordered Federal aid to supplement local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe thunderstorms on August 7, 2000.

The President's action makes Federal funding available to the District of Columbia on a cost share basis for the repair or replacement of public facilities damaged by the severe thunderstorms.

Federal funding is also available on a cost share basis for hazard mitigation measures.

James L. Witt, Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), named Thomas Davies as the Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal recovery operations in the affected area.
