PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES NAJEEB HALABY TO THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS TRUST

FUND BOARD

The President today announced his intent to appoint Najeeb E. Halaby to serve as a member of the Library of Congress Trust Fund Board.

Mr. Najeeb E. Halaby, of McLean, Virginia, has had a long and distinguished career, both in the public and private sector. He had a number of stints of government service, including serving President Truman in the Office of Research and Intelligence, under President Eisenhower as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, and as President Kennedy's Federal Aviation Administrator. From 1969 to 1972 he was CEO of Pan American World Airways, and also served on the board of directors of several corporations, including BankAmerica Corporation, Chrysler Corporation, Uniroyal Corporation, Viacom International and Whirlpool Corporation. Additionally, Mr. Halaby is Chairman Emeritus of Save the Children Federation and was Chairman and CEO of The Wolf Trap Foundation. He has also been involved in a great many public endeavors including the governing units of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American University of Beirut (Chairman), the Amon Carter Museum, Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, Business Council for International Understanding, Council on Foreign Relations, Stanford University, and Harvard University, and many other organizations.

Among his publications are Crosswinds - An Airman's Memoir and The First 40 Years of Jet Aviation. He has been awarded a number of decorations, including the Legion of Honor (France), Medal of Independence (Jordan) and the Order of Cedars (Lebanon). In 1995 he was awarded the National Air and Space Museum Trophy for Lifetime Achievement.

Mr. Halaby is a graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School.

The Library of Congress Trust Fund Board was created in 1925 and acts as an advisory and administrative board of the Library of Congress. The Board invests and administers funds received by it or the Library of Congress from foundations and other private sources.
