THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release July 18, 2000
STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE ON THE DEATH
                     OF GEORGIA SENATOR PAUL COVERDELL

Tipper and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Georgia's senior Senator Paul Coverdell.

During his years in the U.S. Senate, Paul Coverdell worked hard to improve the lives of families in Georgia and across the nation. His leadership on tough issues -- keeping drugs out of our nation's schools and our communities and ensuring that all children have access to a good education -- are just a few examples of the many contributions Senator Coverdell made to improve the quality of life in America.

Senator Coverdell also exemplified the true spirit of volunteerism. As head of the Peace Corps under President George Bush, and throughout his career in the Senate, he worked to encourage more people to give back to their communities and our world.

Senator Coverdell's leadership will be long remembered and greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Nancy, and the Coverdell family.
