           VICE PRESIDENT GORE ANNOUNCES NEW WORKERS.GOV WEBSITE
          WITH 1,000 LINKS TO GOVERNMENT SERVICES AND INFORMATION

     Washington, DC -- Vice President Al Gore today announced a new

website that gives American workers and their families a new Internet gateway to government information and services. The new website, www.workers.gov, connects the public with more than 1,000 federal, state and local government resources.

"This is an exciting time for workers and their families -- a time of unprecedented prosperity and new hope for the future," Vice President Gore said. "We are working hard to bring consolidated customer service to citizens through the Internet and provide the information workers want to have in the new digital economy. Workers.gov is a unique gateway into a universe of resources, putting government at the fingertips of American workers."

With workers.gov anyone can search a variety of Internet job listings, acquire new skills through distance learning, scan websites for the latest medical information, find services for families in need, plan for retirement, or explore resources available for people with disabilities. Families can also plan their annual vacations, obtain advice on managing and investing their income or look for volunteer opportunities. From filing a safety complaint to finding school lunch programs or health insurance for children, workers.gov gives American workers and their families access to the information they need.

"Today marks another triumph in the movement towards a completely interactive government," Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman said. "This new website will make government services more accessible and help American workers get the skills and make the connections they need to succeed in the 21st Century economy."

Workers.gov is divided into nine user-friendly categories: jobs, learning, family and health, housing and transportation, rights and protections, disabilities resources, money management, citizenship, and recreation and travel. A cross-government team led by Vice President Gore's National Partnership for Reinventing Government (NPR) and the U.S. Department of Labor designed the site.

Vice President Gore's National Partnership for Reinventing Government is an interagency task force created in 1993 to find ways to make government work better, cost less and get results Americans care about.

Workers.gov is the next step in the Vice President's commitment to custom tailor government to citizens' specific needs. NPR has pioneered this concept through the development of websites like Access America for Students, www.students.gov, Access America for Seniors, www.seniors.gov, Access America for Business, www.business.gov, Tradenet, www.tradenet.gov, and Access America Online Magazine www.accessamerica.gov.
