THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release July 10, 2000
STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE ON
THE DEPARTURE OF SECRETARY TOGO WEST

The announcement today of Secretary Togo West's planned departure form the Department of Veterans Affairs marks the end of a long and distinguished career by one of our nation's premier public servants. As Secretary of the Army, Togo worked to provide those who serve in uniform the tools, training, and leadership they need. As Secretary of Veterans Affairs he has worked to provide those that served the care and honor they deserve. I am proud of Togo's leadership and grateful for his selfless service.

In selecting Deputy Secretary Hershel Gober to succeed Togo West, President Clinton has made an excellent choice. As a Vietnam Veteran and proven leader, Hershel brings valuable experience and expertise to the position. I am confident he can build upon Togo's achievements to carry the VA into the future.
