THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release June 12, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT ON THE STATE OF TENNESSE BEING DECLARED

A MAJOR DISASTER AREA

Today I am pleased that the Administration declared my home state of Tennessee a major disaster area in light of the severe storms, tornadoes and floods that occurred there in late May. This declaration is the first step toward providing dozens of families and businesses in Anderson, Benton, Cheatham, Davidson, Henry, Hickman, Houston, Jackson, Knox, Lake, Obion, Perry, and Stewart counties with the resources they need to rebuild their lives and communities in the wake of this disaster.

My heart remains in Tennessee and I am deeply committed to ensuring the people of this state receive all available assistance for as long as is necessary. This has been a difficult time for many still struggling to rebuild their lives and communities-- and I want to make sure they have all the tools to do so.

I know that the country joins me in offering prayers and support to the families of Tennessee --especially those who lost loved ones.
