THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release June 7, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT ON INCREASING PARTICIPATION OF MEDICARE

BENEFICIARIES IN CLINICAL TRIALS

Like millions of Americans, I know the burden diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's places on families. For years I have advocated coverage of clinical trials, which provide access to important cutting edge treatment.

I am pleased that today, the President has directed the Department of Health and Human Services to require the Medicare program to reimburse providers for the routine care costs of patients participating in clinical trials, removing the financial barriers that prevent many seniors from participating. I commend the bipartisan efforts of Senators Rockefeller and Mack as well as Congresswoman Johnson and Congressman Cardin for their leadership on this issue and their contribution towards this policy revision.

With the fast pace of medical advancement and continuing efforts to make evidence based medical decisions, clinical trials serve to move innovations to the forefront of medical practice. This new step is vitally important to the health of America's senior citizens.
