              PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES DONALD J. SUTHERLAND TO
        THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE BARRY GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP AND 
                 EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION FOUNDATION

     The President announced today his intent to nominate Donald J.

Sutherland to the Board of Trustees of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

Mr. Donald J. Sutherland, of Glen Head, New York, is the general partner of Quincy Partners, a management and investment firm. Prior to forming Quincy Partners, Mr. Sutherland was an investment banker, first at Laird, Inc. and then at New Court Securities Corp. (now Rothschild, Inc.) Earlier, he was a management consultant with McKinsey and Company. Mr. Sutherland is also active in a number of educational institutions, and is, on the boards of trustees of Hofstra University and St. Michael's College and visiting committees of Harvard and the New School. He is also active with Human Rights Watch and the Andover (Phillips Academy) Development Board.

Mr. Sutherland is a graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover, Princeton and Harvard Business School.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation is responsible for supervising and directing a scholarship program aimed at fostering and encouraging excellence in the sciences, mathematics and engineering.
