PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES DR. THOMAS L. GARTHWAITE AS UNDER SECRETARY FOR
HEALTH FOR VETERANS AFFAIRS
President Clinton today announced his intent to nominate Dr. Thomas L. Garthwaite as Under Secretary for Health for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Dr. Thomas L. Garthwaite, of Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, has served as Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Veterans Affairs since 1995. His prior appointments have included Chief of Staff and Associate Chief of Staff/Research at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He also served as the Associate Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Garthwaite received his A.B. degree from Cornell University and his M.D. degree from Temple University. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and specializes in endocrinology.
The Under Secretary for Health serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Veterans Health Administration. This administration operates the national health care delivery system for eligible veterans; administers a program of education and training for health care personnel; directs a program of medical research; and provides contingency support for the Department of Defense and public health care services during times of war or national emergency. Over 3.5 million veterans are enrolled for care in the veterans health care system.
