THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release April 19, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT ON FOOD STAMPS FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL

I do not agree with the proposal recently made by a Department of Defense official to reduce the number of service members receiving food stamps by changing the eligibility rules. Nor does this proposal represent the views of the Department of Defense.

I believe that we can and should find ways to eliminate the kinds of conditions that require soldiers to make ends meet by relying on food stamps. I have been exchanging ideas in the White House and with the Office of the Secretary of Defense to address the situation, and will make recommendations to the President in the near future.
