THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release April 19, 2000
                    STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT
ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING

Five years ago today, our nation was rocked by one of the cruelest acts of terrorism America has ever seen. The lives of one hundred sixty-eight men, women, and children were destroyed senselessly by individuals twisted by hate and evil. And today, we still struggle to heal.

The memorial that is being dedicated today demonstrates to America the strength of the people of Oklahoma City. In the wake of this tragedy we must remember that the truest course is not only to honor those who were lost, but to embrace the future that was in their hearts. The renewal that we find in this place symbolizes a rebirth of hope in a place that has seen too much pain.

May the memory of those who were lost continue to live in our hearts and in the memorial dedicated today.
