STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
President Clinton to Visit Portugal, Germany, Russia, and Ukraine
May 30-June 6
President Clinton will travel to Portugal May 30 through June 1, to Aachen and Berlin, Germany, June 1-3, 2000, to Moscow, Russia, June 4-5, and to Kiev, Ukraine, June 6.
In Lisbon, the President will attend the bi-annual United States-European Union Summit meeting. He also has accepted an invitation by the Portuguese to conduct a bilateral visit.
In Aachen, the President will accept the Charlemagne Prize, which has been awarded annually since 1949 to international figures who have made a special contribution to European unification. In Berlin, German Chancellor Schroeder has invited the President to hold bilateral discussions. The President has also accepted the Chancellor's invitation to take part in the "Conference on Progressive Governance for the 21st Century."
In Moscow, the President will meet with President-elect Putin and other Russian leaders. The President also hopes to use his visit to speak to a broad spectrum of Russian leaders who are building new democratic institutions, civil society, and a market economy.
The President will also visit Kiev on June 6 for talks with President Kuchma and other senior Ukrainian officials and then return to Washington that evening.
