              PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JAMES L. WHIGHAM AS 
      UNITED STATES MARSHAL FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF ILLINOIS

The President today announced his intent to nominate James L. Whigham to serve as United States Marshal for the Northern District of Illinois.

Mr. James L. Whigham, of Chicago, Illinois, has been employed with the Chicago Police Department, Chicago, Illinois since 1969. He was promoted through the ranks to Deputy Superintendent of Technical Services; he has served in this capacity since 1992. Mr. Whigham currently serves on the Board of Regents of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls as well as the Board of Trustees of the St. Jude Police League.

Mr. Whigham received a B.A. degree and a M.S. degree from Chicago State University. He served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968.

The United States Marshal Service is responsible for providing support and protection for the Federal courts, apprehending Federal fugitives, operating the Federal Witness Security program, maintaining custody of and transporting Federal prisoners, and responding to emergency crisis situations.
