       PRESIDENT CLINTON DECLARES A MAJOR DISASTER EXISTS IN THE
                          DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

The President today declared a major disaster exists in the District of Columbia and ordered Federal aid to supplement district recovery efforts in the area struck by a severe winter storm on January 25-31, 2000.

The President's action makes Federal funding available to the District of Columbia on a cost-sharing basis for emergency protective measures.

Federal funding is also available on a cost share basis for hazard mitigation measures.
