             PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ANNE WOODS PATTERSON AS
                      U.S. AMBASSADOR TO COLOMBIA

     The President announced today his intent to nominate Anne Woods

Patterson to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Colombia.

Ambassador Anne Woods Patterson, of Virginia, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor, and has been serving as Ambassador to El Salvador since l997. From l993-l996, she was a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs and prior to that Director for the Andean countries. Ambassador Patterson has held a variety of economic and political assignments since joining the Foreign Service in l973. She received the Department of State's Superior Honor Award in l98l and l988, its Meritorious Honor Award in l977 and l983, and a Presidential Honor Award in l993.

Ambaassador Patterson was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She graduated from Wellesley College and attended the University of North Carolina.
