THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release March 22, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT ON RETIREMENT EARNINGS

I am pleased that the Senate voted unanimously today to give America's seniors the opportunity to work beyond age 65 without being penalized. As more and more of our nation's senior citizens live longer and healthier lives, they remain a vital part of our economy. We have a responsibility to ensure that they receive the resources they need to survive. The elimination of the retired earnings test for seniors provides new opportunities for America's seniors who are healthy and choose to work beyond retirement. I believe that the bipartisan support shown on this measure underscores that we can work together to strengthen Social Security for the future. I encourage my colleagues in Congress to build upon this support and pass strong legislation that protects the future of Social Security and Medicare for all Americans.
