PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ARTHUR C. CAMPBELL AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AT THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE

The President today announced his intent to nominate Arthur C. Campbell as Assistant Secretary for Economic Development at the Department of Commerce.

Mr. Arthur Campbell, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, currently serves as the Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development at the United States Department of Agriculture. In this role, he is responsible for providing departmental leadership for rural economic and community development. Prior to serving the Administration, Mr. Campbell was a County Commissioner in Hamilton County, Tennessee. In addition to his public service, Mr. Campbell served as the Chief Executive Officer of ACC Development, where he established and operated a planning, consulting and development business specializing in community revitalization, economic development, housing market research and real estate development. He also served as Southeast Program Director for the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) where he established and directed a southeastern LISC program to invest corporate and foundation resources into community economic development ventures. Mr. Campbell also served as the Florida President of ER Enterprises, a real estate development company.

Mr. Campbell received a Bachelors of Science degree from Tuskegee Institute and a Masters of City Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The Assistant Secretary for Economic Development serves as the principal adviser to the Secretary of Commerce on matters concerning the economic development of states, regions, areas, districts, centers, and communities in the United States and its possessions.
