THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release February 25, 2000
                    RADIO ACTUALITY OF THE PRESIDENT
ON REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL FEDERAL AID FOR FISHING INDUSTRY

THE PRESIDENT: Many fishing communities are suffering unexpected losses that severely threaten their livelihoods. In the Long Island Sound, the lobster catch has fallen sharply. On the West Coast there's been a serious decline in groundfish stocks. I'm calling on Congress to provide $56 million to help communities recover from recent fishing disasters, and to study ways we can restore the long-term health of our vital fishing industry.
