      PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ROSE M. LIKINS AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO
                              EL SALVADOR

     The President announced today his intent to nominate Rose M. Likins

to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of El Salvador.

Ms. Rose M. Likins, of Arlington, Virginia, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Counselor. Ms. Likins is currently serving as a Deputy Executive Secretary of the Department of State. Her previous assignments have included overseas postings as Deputy Chief of Mission in Sofia, Bulgaria; as a political officer in Asuncion, Paraguay; and as a consular officer in Monterrey, Mexico. Ms. Likins has also served in the State Department as Director of the Operations Center, Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary for Global Affairs, Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary, Honduras desk officer and staff assistant in the then- Bureau of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs.

Ms. Likins (nee McCartney) graduated magna cum laude from Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Affairs and Spanish. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Mortar Board Society. Ms. Likins speaks Spanish and Bulgarian.
