     PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES E. ASHLEY WILLS AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO
                         SRI LANKA AND MALDIVES

     The President announced today his intent to nominate E. Ashley

Wills to be U.S. Ambassador to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and to the Republic of Maldives.

Mr. E. Ashley Wills, of Georgia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Career Minister, has been a Foreign Service Officer since 1972. His most recent assignment was as Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi, India. Prior to that, he served in Brussels, Belgium; Belgrade, Yugoslavia; as head of South African Affairs at the State Department; as Political Advisor to the Commander of U.S. Forces in Greneda; in Bridgetown, Barbados; Durban, South Africa; and in Bucharest, Romania.

Mr. Wills graduated from the University of Virginia in 1971, and has an MA in Economics from Johns Hopkins University. He speaks Serbo-Croatian, Romania, French, and Persian.
