PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES EDWARD WILLIAM GNEHM, JR. AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO

AUSTRALIA

The President announced today his intent to nominate Edward William Gnehm, Jr., to be U.S. Ambassador to Australia.

Ambassador Edward William Gnehm, Jr., of Carrolton, Georgia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Career Minister, is currently Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Personnel at the Department of State. He previously served as Deputy Representative of the United States to the United Nations with the rank of Ambassador from 1994-1997, and as Ambassador to the State of Kuwait from 1990 - 1994. Ambassador Gnehm also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near East and South Asian Affairs at the Department of State and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Near East and South Asia at the Department of Defense. He has served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Jordan and the Yemen Arab Republic and was Director of the Secretariat Staff in the Office of the Secretary. Ambassador Gnehm has also served in Syria, Nepal, Vietnam, and Saudi Arabia. He joined the Foreign Service in 1969.

Ambassador Gnehm graduated from George Washington University in 1966, and completed a year of graduate study at the American University in Cairo, Egypt in 1968.
