             PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES RUST MACPHERSON DEMING 
                     AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO TUNISIA

     The President announced today his intent to nominate Rust

Macpherson Deming to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Tunisia.

Mr. Rust Deming, of Bethesda, Maryland, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor. He is currently the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the American Embassy in Tokyo, the last of a number of assignments he had in Japan. Mr. Deming began his Foreign Service career at the American Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia. In Washington, Mr. Deming has held a variety of assignments at the Department of State, including Director of the Office of Japanese Affairs, Deputy Director of the Office of Nuclear Non-proliferation Affairs, and as a Staff Officer in the Executive Secretariat.

Mr. Deming received his Bachelors of Arts degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida and a Master of Arts degree from Stanford University. He also graduated from the National War College.
