       PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES SUSAN S. JACOBS AS U.S. AMBASSADOR
       TO PAPUA NEW GUINEA, TO THE SOLOMON ISLANDS, AND TO VANUATU

     The President announced today his intent to nominate Susan S.

Jacobs to be U.S. Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, to the Republic of Solomon Islands and to Vanuatu.

Ms. Susan S. Jacobs, of Virginia, was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Counselor, and is currently a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the State Department's Bureau of Legislative Affairs. During her Foreign Service career Ms. Jacobs has served overseas in Romania, El Salvador, India, Israel and Venezuela as well as in the Bureaus of Consular Affairs and International Organization Affairs in the Department.

Ms. Jacobs graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in political science and pursued post-graduate studies at Georgetown University and George Washington University. She speaks Spanish and Romanian.
