                 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JOHN F. TEFFT 
                    AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO LITHUANIA

     The President announced today his intent to nominate John F. Tefft

to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Lithuania.

Mr. John F. Tefft, of Springfield, Virginia, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor. He joined the Foreign Service in l972 and has served abroad in Jerusalem, Budapest, Rome and Moscow. Mr. Tefft has also held a number of positions at the U.S. State Department including Director of the Office of Northern European Affairs and Deputy Director of the Office of Soviet Affairs.

Mr. Tefft was born in Madison, Wisconsin and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee and a Master of Arts degree from Georgetown University.
