THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release January 7, 2000

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

I extend my personal greetings to Muslims across our nation and around the world as you mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan and begin to celebrate the festival of Eid Al-Fitr.

Your observance of this sacred month -- through fasting, prayer and reflection on the teachings of the Holy Quran -- reminds us that regardless of our faith we all share a common commitment to family, community and peace.

And as you welcome the appearance of the new moon and begin a period of rejoicing a celebration, Tipper and I wish you a memorable holy celebration. As-Salaam wa alaykum. May peace be with you and may God grant you health and prosperity, now and in the years ahead.
