THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release December 23, 1999

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

Tipper and I extend warm greetings to all celebrating Kwanzaa this year.

A celebration of hope and purpose, Kwanzaa, through both its symbols and principles, infuses our holiday season with the rich cultural traditions of the African heritage, reminding all Americans that our country is strong not despite our diversity, but because of it.

As we prepare to begin a new millennium, let us take to heart the seven principles of Kwanzaa -- unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith -- and pledge to make the 21st century one where all our children are healthy and safe, our families are strong and successful and our nation is prosperous and unified.
