STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

I want to express my profound sympathy to the families of the brave American servicemen who lost their lives -- and those who are still missing -- after two tragic accidents yesterday. These accidents remind us of the sacrifices borne by our servicemen and women, who risk their lives to keep the peace and protect us -- here at home and around the world.

As we enter the holiday season -- a time that is all too often marked by separation and sacrifice for American military and their families -- we should remember that our holidays are made more happy and peaceful because of their constant, vigilant guard.

Tipper and I hold all the families -- and all of those who sustained injuries in these terrible accidents -- in the center of our prayers.
