THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release November 10, 1999

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

I am very pleased that the Senate today voted on a bipartisan basis to confirm Carol Moseley-Braun as our nation's new Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa.

During her time in the Senate, Carol was not just a path-breaker -- the first African-American woman to serve in the United States Senate -- she was a strong voice for the people of Illinois and indeed the nation.

I believe that strong voice, her dedication to public service and her wealth of experience will serve the American people well in her new position as a representative of our nation.
