              PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES CAROL MOSELEY-BRAUN FOR
                      U.S. AMBASSADOR TO NEW ZEALAND

     The President today announced his intent to nominate Carol

Moseley-Braun to be U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand.

Ms. Moseley-Braun, of Chicago, Illinois, was the first African American female in the United States Senate, having served in that position from 1992 through 1998. For 14 years prior to her service in the United States Senate, Ms. Moseley-Braun served in the Illinois Legislature and as the Recorder of Deeds for Cook County, Illinois. From 1973 through 1977, Ms. Moseley-Braun was as Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois. She currently is serving as a consultant to the United States Department of Education.

Ms. Moseley-Braun received a B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1969 and a J.D. from University of Chicago Law School in 1972.
