Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release September 3, 1999

LABOR DAY, 1999

Today we pay tribute to America's hard working men and women. We honor generations of Americans on whose tireless labor this great country was built, and we look forward to future generations that will maintain our prosperity and unique national spirit.

As we take time to relax with our families this Labor Day, we celebrate the work that is being done every day -- work that is driving this great nation in countless ways.

This Labor Day we have much for which we can be thankful. Under this administration we have created 19 million new jobs in the last 6 years, spurred the fastest and longest real wage growth in two decades, and as a result, have the lowest unemployment in 29 years. We are truly a nation of jobs and opportunity.

Now it is time to use this prosperity to help those Americans that have been left behind get the skills they need to grow and succeed. Together we must work to bring change that allows all hard working men and women -- regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status -- succeed in their most important roles as parents, spouses, and community leaders.

Remember that our work today will lay the foundation for a strong future for all our nation's families in the decades to come.

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday.
