STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Meeting with Georgian President Shevardnadze

President Clinton will meet with the President of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze, at the White House on September 23. President Shevardnadze will be visiting the United States to speak before the United Nations General Assembly, and will then travel to Washington for meetings with the Administration and Congress.

The United States strongly supports the sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity of Georgia, and recognizes in particular the critical role that President Shevardnadze plays in promoting prosperity and democratic development for all the people of Georgia. The two Presidents will review the full range of U.S.-Georgian cooperation and discuss opportunities to enhance this relationship in the period ahead.
