THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release August 16, 1999

STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE

My heart goes out to the families of Wisconsin during this difficult time -- especially to those that lost their homes and loved ones as a result of the severe storms that swept through the state this past June.

I know the recent severe storms have taken quite a toll on the people of Wisconsin. But I want them to know that Federal Assistance is on the way. President Clinton's declaration today of Wisconsin as a major disaster area will bring much needed resources to those counties that suffered damages. These counties include: Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Florence, Iron, Oneida, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, and Vilas. Additionally, all counties in the state are eligible to apply for assistance in taking hazard mitigation measures.

Under the coordination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the federal government will provide the necessary resources to meet immediate disaster needs.

Again, I want to assure the families of Wisconsin that we will do everything we can to see that their state receives available assistance for as long as necessary.

Tipper and I will continue to keep the people of Wisconsin in our prayers.
