THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release July 28, 1999

STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE

My heart goes out to the families of Minnesota during this difficult time -- especially those who lost their homes.

I know the recent severe storms -- which have been responsible for the intense flooding in the state -- have taken quite a toll on the people of Minnesota. But I want them to know that Federal assistance is on the way. President Clinton's declaration today of Minnesota as a major disaster area will bring much needed resources to those counties that were damaged. These counties include Cook, Itasca, and St. Louis. Public Assistance will be provided to the counties of Aitkin, Cass, Clay, Cook, Hubbard, Itasca, Lake, and St. Louis.

Under the coordination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the federal government will provide the necessary resources to meet immediate disaster needs.

Again, I want to assure the families of Minnesota that we will do everything we can to see that their state receives available assistance for as long as is necessary.

Tipper and I will continue to keep the people of Minnesota in our prayers.
