STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

       Agreement Between Argentina and the United Kingdom on the
                       Falklands/Malvinas Islands

The President welcomes the successful outcome, July 14 in London, of talks between Argentina and the United Kingdom to resolve issues related to the Falklands/Malvinas and other South Atlantic islands. The agreement reached will faciliate travel to the Falklands/Malvinas, promote confidence building measures, and address important environmental and fishery issues. The agreement demonstrates the determination of both Argentina and the United Kingdom to work cooperatively and constructively to promote the well-being and stability of the region. The President congratulates President Menem, Prime Minister Blair, and their respective governments on this important agreement.
