STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

                  Elie Wiesel Reports on his Visit to
                 Refugee Camps in Macedonia and Albania

The President met today with Mr. Elie Wiesel, who traveled to Albania and Macedonia from May 31 to June 3, 1999, at the request of the President. While in these countries, Mr. Wiesel visited Kosovar refugees and heard firsthand their accounts of ethnic cleansing and other atrocities. He also met with representatives of international human rights and relief organizations to discuss the humanitarian situation in Kosovo and the impact of refugees on neighboring states.

Mr. Wiesel presented the President with a report of his findings. One of the world's foremost moral philosophers, Mr. Wiesel is a Holocaust survivor who has written and spoken widely on genocide and on related questions of moral responsibility in international affairs.
