             PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES MICHAEL D. METELITS AS
             U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE REPUBLIC OF CAPE VERDE

The President announced today his intent to nominate Michael D. Metelits to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Cape Verde.

Mr. Michael Metelits, of San Diego, California, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Counselor. He joined the Foreign Service in l973 and currently serves as the Director of the Office of Environmental Policy in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental Scientific Affairs. Prior assignments include the National War College, Angola, Brazil, Mozambique, the U.S. Mission to the UN Food Agencies in Rome, the U.S. Mission to the UN in New York, and various assignments in the Department of State in Washington.

Mr. Metelits earned a B.A. from Northwestern University, an M.S. and a Ph.D. from the University of California, and an M.S. from the National War College.
