For Immediate Release May 28, 1999
PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES MARCELLE LEAHY AS A
MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR THE
                  STUDENT LOAN MARKETING ASSOCIATION

The President today announced his intent to appoint Marcelle Leahy to be a member of the Board of Directors for the Student Loan Marketing Association.

Ms. Marcelle Leahy, of Middlesex, Vermont, has achieved a successful career as a licensed Registered Nurse, and has contributed her skill and insights to medical organizations in Vermont and to women in Vermont pursuing or launching careers of their own. She has worked most recently as a staff nurse in the Medical-Surgical Unit of Arlington Hospital in Arlington, Virginia. Previously, she was a board member of Vermont Nursing Initiatives, the Visiting Nurses Association and a member of the Advisory Council of the Norwich University School of Nursing. Ms. Leahy now serves on the Advisory Board of the University of Vermont School of Nursing, and is a board member of the Meridian International Center and the Washington Opera.

Ms. Leahy graduated in 1962 from the Jeanne Mance School of Nursing, DeGoesbriand Memorial Hospital in Burlington, Vermont, and was recertified in nursing at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in 1988.

The Student Loan Marketing Corporation (Sallie Mae) was created by an act of Congress in 1972 to provide funding and liquidity for federally guaranteed education loans, and in 1996, Congress enacted and President Clinton signed legislation authorizing its restructuring as a fully private, state-chartered corporation. Sallie Mae is the nation's largest source of funding and servicing support for education loans for students and their parents.
