THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release May 21, 1999
REMARKS BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE IN A RADIO
ACTUALITY ON THE IOWA DISASTER DECLARATION

"This is Vice President Al Gore. I am pleased to announce that President Clinton has signed a major disaster declaration for Iowa.

This would make the following ten counties in the state eligible for Individual Assistance: Black Hawk, Brimmer, Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Harrison, Jones and Linn counties. All counties are eligible to apply for assistance under the hazard mitigation grant program.

Tipper and I are deeply concerned about the terrible losses suffered by the many Iowa families as a result of these destructive storms and floods. Our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones, had their homes destroyed and were left without the essential community services. And we praise the efforts of the many state, local and volunteer emergency workers who are meeting the immediate challenge of assisting all those in critical need.

The federal family is committed to providing the necessary resources to comfort every person and family devastated by this disaster and to help them return to their normal way of living as fast as possible."
