Statement By the Press Secretary

White House Initiates Review on Space Launch Failures

President Clinton today directed Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen to work in coordination with Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet and NASA Administrator Dan Goldin to provide a report later this year on the causes of the recent series of failures of U.S. space launch systems to deliver satellites to their proper orbits, and the corrections needed to assure our future access to space. Dr. Neal Lane, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, will work closely with the Secretary of Defense, the Director of Central Intelligence, and the NASA Administrator on this important issue.
